ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) will meet today (Saturday) to decide the prime ministerial candidate to replace Nawaz Sharif, who was disqualified as the prime minister in a landmark verdict by the Supreme Court on the Panama Papers case.

Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and party veterans Asif Kirmani and Pervaiz Rashid have reached the PM house. The meeting is likely to include discussion on candidates for PM, party’s new president, and members of the Cabinet.

Speaking on Geo New’s program Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath, Khawaja Saad Rafique said it will be decided in a party meeting to be held at 4PM today (Saturday) if the party leadership will nominate an interim PM for 45 days and Shehbaz Sharif would later be given a chance by party leadership to serve as PM or one individual will be nominated to work for the entire remaining tenure.

Following his ousting, Sharif met with senior party leaders and recommended his brother, CM Punjab Shehbaz Sharif as his replacement as Pakistan’s PM.

A name has not been announced for the interim prime minister, who will fill the 45-day vacuum until Shehbaz Sharif is likely elected to a National Assembly seat.

According to reports, two names have surfaced for the interim prime minister — Khawaja Asif and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Sharif stepped down as the prime minister of Pakistan on Friday after being disqualified from holding public office by the Supreme Court.

Announcing its verdict, the five-member bench unanimously disqualified Sharif for failing to disclose his un-withdrawn receivables constituting assets from UAE-based Capital FZE in his nominations papers for the 2013 General Election, stating that this meant he was not ‘honest’ and ‘truthful’, as per the Constitution
